A Better
Life
What did those weary travellers feel
After months of trudging north
Through the biting winds
And unforgiving plains
Where dangers lurked just out of sight
And some lay closer to home.
An errant howl
The snapping of a twig
Would send them panicking
Spears in hand
Waiting for something to strike.
Nothing.
They sat back down
Huddled together,
Their stomachs growling their discontent.
Time passed
Was it worth it, all those months
Of fear and torment and hunger
Searching the wastes for a better life.
No, the younger voiced their dissent
The eldest of them, a brave soul
Led them off in disgust
To try their hand at surviving the hell.
They may not have been thankful for the land they found
But needless to say their decedents are.
