The gloom filled everything like a conquering army eager for land
it covered the grass and flowers
turned rich soil into sand
sucked the juice from ripe marrows
bridging the water like a ragged pier
crushing perspiration, turning joy into a tear.
its battalions rolled onto meadow and stream
converting life into a dream.
