The sunshine fell upon tree, flower and grass,
upon sinuous river and softly flowing stream,
beyond the castle, as years began to pass
in the sonorous manner of a dream.
The captured knights were long ago set free,
living and dying with their wives,
but the knight remained imprisoned, he did not see
the changing seasons, only he did not thrive.
Why? What had happened in those distant years?
As the castle crumbled, leaving only the cells,
turrets and battlements crumbling into overgrown weirs
as if cast down by a witch's sullen spells.
Looked after by an old woman, driven mad by her lot,
the old gnarled knight was simply forgot.
